My goal is to shop black owned as much as possible? Here’s why…

  1. Studies have shown by 2053 black wealth will fall to zero. Source Now because of the global pandemic we may get there sooner. In order to see the change we want and need we must begin by keeping money in our communities.

  2. To get rid of the “I would buy black but...” stigma. Meaning that shoppers with this mentality go into black businesses with the expectation of it failing before their money is ever spent. If there is one mistake, there is no grace. The disappointment is labeled as a standard for all black business and that affects us. We have to put and end to negative thinking. There isn’t anything wrong with being honest about your experience but when it’s a negative one, don’t make it your business to destroy theirs. Allow it to be a teachable moment, and leave constructive feedback instead. And as a business, receive the feedback. There is a great article over on Shoppe Black about 5 ways Black Business can Improve Customer Service. As a consumer I believe we can do our part in helping them improve.

  3. Also, to support the dreams of those who look like me and to be in spaces with those who value me as a customer.

So my experience at Slim and Husky’s yesterday at 911 Buchanan Street in Nashville, TN was amazing! Everything was black and excellent!

Mom and I needed lunch after yet a long wait while Dad was being admitted to the hospital. Because of Covid-19 when he has an ER visit, we can’t go in the hospital until he is officially admitted. When that happens only one person can be with him. So, we waited nearly 9 hours for him to be transferred from the ER to hospital admission. During that time we got hungry several times.

I wanted something different than Mom’s usual Captain D’s trip. So I chose Slim and Husky’s. Mom wasn’t thrilled at first cause she doesn’t really like pizza, but I convinced her they had pasta. So we arrive at the 911 location and was greeted by a smiling face! Mask were required and the employees did an excellent job in making sure patrons entered with a mask and practiced social distancing. Because it was our first time the employee explained the process of how to choose our pizza. It was pretty simple. Then I asked for pasta and the 911 location didn’t offer pasta. So she directed us to the 1006 Buchanan Street location, for pasta, which was within walking distance. So we left and I didn’t realize this was a walk up window location. Which is fine. When we got to the window, I was directed to order the pasta online and we could pickup at the window. I thought that was kind of inconvenient considering I could order pizza and cinnamon rolls without doing so online. I go online to order and I didn’t see a photo of the pasta. I don’t like trying something new without seeing what it looks like. But that’s ok. It started to rain so I decided We’ll stick with the pizza and go back to the 911 location so we can dine in.

The Pream Team welcomed us back, asked if something was wrong, and I told her no, we just decided to order our pizza here.

Long story short, we dined in. We enjoyed a playlist of 80s-00s black r&b music. The ambience of the restaurant spoke black excellence, from the modern decor, black art on the walls, all black staff and great service. It was such a happy experience.

Mom, who doesn’t “care for pizza” said, “I need to hang out with you young folk more often, y’all find all the good places!” Mom loved it!

We enjoyed our create your own Husky’s! I can’t wait to go back. I’m going back Wednesday.
